AHH, just received this message from Shaminder Dulai, the organizer...
-----------------------
You've been sent a Flickr Mail from Shawagg:
------------------------------------------------------------
:: About the lighting workshop on the 22nd
Hi Duo,
Thanks for coming out Thurs. I hope you enjoyed it and come
back in the future.
I just checked with Glenn and I'm sorry to say I gave you
some bad info the other night.
Glenn has an exclusive contract with Fotovision, however he
has been working with SJSU for years and is able to come
here.
However, because of the exclusive contract, only SJSU
students can come to the workshop. I'm sorry for telling
you otherwise, I hope you understand.
So for the workshop - only SJSU students.
For the guest speakers and such - anyone!
Thanks
---------------------------------------
Sorry Everyone! I was misinformed... If you're an SJSU student you can still attend...
I'll keep you guys updated for guest speaker events, etc. |

So, can someone give an update on how this workshop went?
David seemed to be negative about it when I met him earlier
during the fashion show.
I've been thinking about giving a lighting class, that's why I'm
asking.

I left at 3pm. My friend said Glen did some demos with various lighting setups.
Before that, he went thru his slides and talked about how he got each shot... the lighting, the setup, the challenges. He talked briefly about equipment.
I'd like to learn more about ETTL and how to work with 1 or more flashes. But he didn't really covered that much on ETTL. Basically his technique is just focus-recompose and FEC. He talked about maintain ambient light and use flash as fill (adjust EFC as needed). He also talked about the his basic exposure technique: shutter speed will control background exposure, aperture will control foreground.
I hoped there would be a more sophisticated way to work with ETTL, especially in combination with different metering modes, focus points and FEL... |

yea, ETTL is a tricky punk. What flash are you using right now?
I have the Sigma, if you remember, but I almost always have it on an off camera cord with a diffuser on it, I shoot in manual and always at the same distance away from my subjections (when covering club events). I've found ETTL to be really inaccurate so I don't bother using it. One saving grace about the EF 500 DG Super is that it can act as a remote slave without a master, all it needs is a flash.
From what I've heard though is that the 580ex is more consistent in its operation with ETTL2 due to the distance information from lenses.
If you do end up using manual like me, just keep in mind the inverse square law. if you move back and increase the distance x2, you're outputing 1/4 the power so you'll need to bump it up twice. to get the same amount of fill.
at 4x the distance, you're outputing 1/16th, meaning bump up your output by 4 times. _________________ stan |

I always feel that you just have to learn your equipment. Not that you'll get perfect exposure everytime, but some understanding of it will get you far better results. And quicker too.
I still have the Sigma. Though I'm currently looking for another flash (either 580EX or 430EX). I always wanted to setup multiple wireless ETTL...
I shoot in M mode(camera mode), but ETTL flash mode. I've understood quite a bit about ETTL, so I kind of know what to expect and what to do in different situations, but there's always another way to get there, maybe quicker.
Shooting in M flash mode is fine but it just takes much longer. You'll always have to check for distance. If you bounce, diffuse, it makes it more complicated.
ETTL 2 is camera dependent, not flash. In other words, if you have 20D/1DmkII/XT or later cameras, you can have ETTL2 with any of the ETTL compatible flashes (550EX,420EX,Sigma EF500 Super, etc)
The difference between the current generation flash and previous gen flash is that they are much more easier to work with, have faster recycle time, more power, and have better AF assist feature(580 AF assist will work with all 45AF pts in 1D).
EDIT: oh yeah, the newer flashes will also auto zoom to match crop size of sensors. |
