Not sure if this will work for you, but I've been using this:
http://www.amazon.com/Western-Digital-Network-ready-Player-WDBAAN0000NBK-NESN/dp/B002KKFP9Y/ref=sr_1_2?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1296495265&sr=1-2
Bought mine refurb for ~$60-70 or so. Plays just about everything that I have on my 1TB portable drive, other than RMV/RMVB (which I don't have any of, but not sure about you, considering that some asian entertainment comes in this format). I like the fact that it can read just about everything and I no longer have to convert from mkv/ogm to avi or whatever formats. Video connection is via HDMI and audio via toslink.
I also hacked it to use a different firmware and added moviesheets; not for some people, since it can look kind of busy. Below are a couple samples of the movie sheets that I made for the hacked firmware.

i have a western digital live TV and a pc running boxee. both work well, but the WD is obviously much easier to set up. _________________ //steven

TIVO HD for netflix.
One Generation back desktop computer with wireless mounted behind the flat panel for everything else. Wireless ibm keyboard/mouse unit (blackberry size) for controls.
Technically the desktop computer was "free" as it was my previous desktop. But if you don't have something like that the price can obvious be higher... _________________ -Matt Drown

i was using the ps3 + ps3 media server as a prior setup. it worked so-so for me, required a fast computer and didn't seem to play as many media files for me. if you have a ps3 already, it's definitely worth trying as ps3 media server is free. but YMMV- _________________ //steven

A net top with a GPU would be able to play almost anything if not all media formats. Plus you will have functional web browser |

| I've been trying several methods myself and so far the best has been Apple TV 2. I hear its been hacked for XMBC so I might do that after I feel its stable. I have Itunes on a stand-alone media server |

My popcorn hour can do just that, these guys started consoles that we see being sold today. This outfit used to support pirates only and known in torrents sites Some torrent files can't be played, with popular players, one in particular is Western Digital. WD's raw and analog is not in par. There are some movies that gets stuck in the middle of a movie. Bothers the HELL out of me, however RIPs can play fine, BluRay is a hit and miss, mostly hits, but if ripped in funky format.
Subtitles is also a problem, with the commercial devices, such as.
* SRT
* SMI
* SUB
* SSA
Popcorn hour allows me to rename the subtitle file for example, SSA to a most common SRT.
